Roughly 22 million U.S. workers are exposed to potentially hazardous noise at work each year. And over $240 million is spent annually on workers' compensation for hearing loss. To minimise noise-induced hearing loss, OSHA recommends that workers should not be exposed to noise more than 85 dBA for 8 hours. 

In most cases, the preferred approach is to eliminate the source of hazardous noise. When elimination is not possible, substitution of the loud equipment for quieter equipment may be the next best alternative to protect workers from hazardous noise.
